Aston Villa ended up losing 2-1 to Go Ahead Eagles in the Europa League, and things got even worse when Emiliano Buendia missed a last-minute penalty in Deventer.
Villa got off to a good start with Evann Guessand scoring early after pouncing on the goalkeeper Jari de Busser’s mistake. That gave Unai Emery’s team the lead and seemed to set them up for another European win.
Guessand then had a great chance to make it 2-0 but was denied by De Busser, who also saved from Jadon Sancho later on.
Even though Villa looked the stronger side, the hosts managed to fight back before halftime. Mathis Suray’s shot, deflected off Tyrone Mings, looped past Emiliano Martinez to level things up.
Just after the hour, Go Ahead Eagles took the lead. Mats Deijl ran through unmarked and calmly lifted the ball over Martinez to make it 2-1.
Villa got a chance to equalize late when Dean James handled inside the box, but Buendia’s penalty went way over the bar. That loss by Villa handed a surprising victory to the Dutch side.
That win was a big moment for Go Ahead Eagles, making it their very first Europa League victory ever! It keeps their incredible run going after winning the Dutch Cup last season, which was their first big trophy in 92 years.
As for Villa, losing this game means their perfect streak is over. Now, they’re sitting seventh in the group with six points.
