At least four people lost their lives, and many others were injured after severe storms and a possible tornado occurred on Friday afternoon in the St. Louis area.
The storm caused significant damage, including downed power lines and trees, prompting the government to advise residents to seek shelter.
One of the deceased lost his life at Centennial Christian Church, where part of the structure collapsed. While three people were rescued, one died, as reported by St. Louis Fire Department Battalion Chief William Pollihan.
Radar evidence of a tornado was recorded between 2:30 and 2:50 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in Clayton, Missouri, near Forest Park—home to the St. Louis Zoo and the site of the 1904 World’s Fair.
Marshall Pfahler, a meteorologist, revealed that the majority of damage reports involved downed trees.
Another tornado was reported around 2:50 p.m., closer to Venice, Illinois, possibly producing golf ball-sized hail and moving east at 50 mph.
Authorities advised residents against traveling, and first responders swiftly moved to the affected areas. The St. Louis Zoo also announced that its facility will remain locked due to the storm, with no damage details readily available.
