Gerry Connolly, a representative of Virginia from the Democratic died at the age of 75 years on Wednesday, as reported by the politician’s family.
The congressman was a member of the parliament in 2009; he represented Virginia’s 11th Congressional District. He mentioned last month that he would not be recontesting the election as a representative and would be stepping down from his leadership role on the House Oversight Committee.
His decision not to recontest the position comes after the return of esophageal cancer, a diagnosis that was first discovered in November.
“When I announced my diagnosis six months ago, I promised transparency,” Connolly stated at the time. “After gruelling treatments, we’ve learned that the cancer, while initially beaten back, has now returned. I’ll do everything possible to continue to represent you, and thank you for your grace.”
Connolly had previously served on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors for a total of 14 years before he was elected as a congressman. While he was at Fairfax County, he played a major role in shaping the local policy in northern Virginia.
He was known for his dedication and principles during his years in public service.
