Superbowl winner Russell Wilson and the New York Giants have agreed on a one-year deal for the free agent, with a $10.5 million guaranteed payment.
Wilson had a choice. He could join the Cleveland Browns, the New York Giants, or the Pittsburgh Steelers, and he opted to go for the Giants. He had won the Super Bowl XLVIII in MetLife Stadium, New York, but as a Seattle Seahawks quarterback. Could he find that groove again in New York?
Currently, the Giants quarterback room is loaded, with Rusell joining Jamie’s Winston and Tommy DeVito. Tommy DeVito has featured in 12 games for the Giants in the past two seasons.
So, while Russell is closer to retirement than his prime, he would play a backup role with the Giants.
The Giants are still on the lookout for a future quarterback since Wilson, Winston, and DeVito don’t have long-term deals. The Giants still hold the No. 3 pick in the NFL drafts, so they’re open to start prepping a future squad.
Although Wilson has had a good career so far, his stint with the Steelers did not end too well. He started well, quickly replacing Justin Fields as the starting quarterback but ended the season with five straight losses.
His first ten years as a pro was the highlight of his career. He sat pretty grounded with the Seattle Seahawks and helped them to the Super Bowl XLVIII win. Then, he went to Denver.
Due to his insane performance with the Seahawks, the Denver Broncos signed Wilson on a five-year deal worth $242.6 million. They assumed he was the savior they needed since they were not doing well. However, Russell performed below expectations.
The Broncos went just 11-19 with Wilson as the starting quarterback and they had to let him go even before his contract expired.
