Julián Álvarez scored the only goal in the match between Atlético Madrid and Osasuna on Sunday, which pushed Diego Simeone’s side to the top of La Liga after a 1-0 victory.
Atletico Madrid now sits at the top of the table with just one point ahead of the defending champions, Real Madrid, and six points over Barcelona at the midway stage of the season.
This victory makes it Atletico Madrid’s 14th straight win across all the competitions they played in, breaking a new club history. It also makes it their consecutive eighth win in La Liga, including a fifth clean sheet, which displayed their strong defense under manager Someone.
It was not an easy one for Osasuna as the team misses their key players, including Ante Budimir, who is their top scorer. Antoine Griezmann’s attempt was also ruled out for handball.
Alvarez was unable to convert an opportunity in the first half into a goal, mishitting a pass from Rodrigo De Paul, but was quick to make amends in the second half.
Alvarez scored his sixth La Liga goal for Atletico Madrid since he joined from Manchester City through a clever corner routine that saw Griezmann’s cross headed back by Clement Lenglet to him.
Atletico stayed committed despite a not-too-good performance with Jan Oblak, their goalkeeper, who rarely faces trouble in the game. Getafe was able to move out of the relegation area after it defeated Las Palmas 2-1 earlier in the day.
