Tension escalated among Rep. Jasmine, a Democratic representative from Texas, and Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) on Tuesday at a House hearing, which caused Mace to challenge Crockett with an angry tone of “Take it outside.”
The clash was because of transgender rights and civil rights as Crockett advocated for the re-establishment of a civil rights subcommittee while he also criticized his colleague’s position on the transgender rights
Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.) came in and accused Mace of trying to incite violence against Crockett while the escalation was ongoing. The two representatives later went to social media to defend their actions after the incident that took place in Congress.
Crockett, in his defense, says he felt threatened and called Mace “an attention-seeking loser,” while Mace mentioned multiple times on social media that her position was not a literal challenge to fight.
Mace has been in the news of late for her bill that targeted transgender rights, including a provision to stop transgender women from using bathrooms for women in Capitol Hill.
The legislation follows the election of Rep. Sarah McBride (D-Del.), who became the first openly transgender member of Congress.
The clash took place in the House Oversight Committee room. The venue has been where many contentious hearings have occurred, including the one that involved personal insults that happened last year.
