The delivering of gifts by Santa Claus started in 1955, 69 years ago. A joint U.S.-Canadian military command situated in Colorado Springs, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), has followed the progress of the movement by Santa in a whimsical holiday ritual.
The tracking would not have ended even if a federal government shutdown had happened, as military personnel and civilian volunteers are very committed to this festive tradition.
The tradition started in 1955 when a misprinted phone number in a Colorado Springs newspaper directed children to the Continental Air Defense Command, NORAD’s predecessor. An on-duty officer assured callers that Santa, also known as Kris Kringle or St. Nick, was on schedule.
