A horrific aviation disaster hit the southwestern part of South Korea on Sunday as a Jeju Air passenger jet, which crash-landed at Muan Airport, killed not less than 177 people.
The Boeing 737-800 plane took off from Bangkok and was loaded with 175 passengers and six crew members. Only two of the six crew members reportedly survived, and two others are yet to be accounted for.
The Jeju Air passenger aircraft crashed at 9 a.m. local time when it skidded through the runway at high speed without its landing gear deployed. It went past the extended runway, hit the barrier, and went ablaze. Watch below:
The footage obtained from news outlets in South Korea showed that the plane was missing its front and rear landing gear as it skidded on the runway on its belly before it exploded. Firefighters were also seen trying to put out the fire, which was scattered across the zone.
Those who lost their lives in the plane crash include 83 females, 82 males, and 12 people whose gender cannot be ascertained at the time of filing this report. All the passengers on the plane, except two people from Thailand, were all South Korean.
This accident is the deadliest aviation disaster ever recorded in South Korea since 1997, when a Korean Airlines crash in Guam killed 228 people.
