A former Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh who was also a key behind the country’s economic liberalization has just died. He was 92 years old.
The former prime Minister who was an economist-turned-politician was also the governor of the Reserve Bank of India. He was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences located in New Delhi after he suddenly lost consciousness at home.
The hospital revealed that Manmohan Singh’s health condition was an age-related issue.
The former prime Minister was popular for his personal integrity and mild demeanor. He was India’s prime Minister for ten years between 2004 to 2014 – making him one of the leaders who have served the country the most. He played a very crucial role in ensuring that India’s economy was liberalized in the 1990s while he was the finance minister.
Singh opted for a low profile after he stepped down as the country’s prime Minister. He left behind his wife and three female children.
Singh’s successor Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is still the country’s prime Minister acknowledged his predecessor as one of India’s “most distinguished leaders,” with the claim that he had humble beginnings and made major contributions to the economic policy of India.
“As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives,” Modi said in a post on X. He called Singh’s interventions in parliament as a lawmaker “insightful” and said “his wisdom and humility were always visible”.
