Following the Presidential debate on Tuesday night, Taylor Swift has picked a candidate that she would like to lend her full support to.
Writing to her more than 250 million followers on Instagram, she publicly endorsed Kamala Harris as the right leader to champion the “rights and causes” that she believes in. She wrote,
“Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight. If you haven’t already, now is a great time to do your research on the issues at hand and the stances these candidates take on the topics that matter to you the most…I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election….I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos.”
The pop culture icon explained that she had to make her intentions known to her followers due to the misinformation being spread online by artificial intelligence that was generated to look like her, falsely endorsing Donald Trump.
“Recently I was made aware that AI of ‘me’ falsely endorsing Donald Trump’s presidential run was posted to his site. It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation. It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter. The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth,” Swift wrote.
Just below her name, at the end of the post, Swift signed off as “Childless Cat Lady,” which was a way of challenging a previous statement made by JD Vance. In a 2021 interview, the 40-year-old Marine veteran had commented that the country was being run by “childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives.” This statement resurfaced online after he was chosen as Trump’s running mate, leading to public criticism. As of the time of writing, the post has received more than 8 million likes.
The news of Taylor Swift’s endorsement reached a lot of people, including the former President who had a rough night during the debate against Harris. On Wednesday morning, during his interview with Fox News, Trump was asked about his feelings concerning the singer’s choice of candidate. He acted nonchalant about the whole thing and claimed that he wasn’t a fan of Taylor Swift to begin with.
“She’s a very liberal person. She seems to always endorse a Democrat, and she’ll probably pay a price for it … in the marketplace.”
Elon Musk, who has been an active supporter of the Republican Presidential candidate, also appeared to mock Taylor Swift’s endorsement on X. He wrote, “Fine Taylor … you win … I will give you a child and guard your cats with my life.” However, many users on X find his post inappropriate and too condescending.
