Russia Signals Possible Amendments To Nuclear Doctrine Amid Ukraine Conflict

vladimir-putin

Russia is looking at changing its agreed position on the use of nuclear weapons as its opponent, Ukraine, continues to move into the Kursk border region in a war that is going on between them.

On Sunday, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov hinted that Putin’s side will soon amend their nuclear doctrine. The soon-to-be-changed doctrine has in it the conditions for which nuclear weapons can be deployed.

Russia is changing its stance in fulfillment of its promise of not hesitating to use nuclear weapons if Ukraine receives support from the Western countries.

The country has accused the West of providing support to Ukraine’s cross-border raids, which have caused almost 500 square miles of Russian land to be seized since the escalation started on August 6. Despite these allegations, the allies of Ukraine, especially NATO, have denied having involvement in the war as they discard the Russians’ claim.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov claimed that the process that leads to the amendment is already at the advanced stage in an interview with Russian state media agency Tass. He said that the amendment was necessary as the country can no longer fold its arms when its security is threatened.

Although Ryabkov did just reveal to the state media agency the deadline or when the amendment will be completed. He blamed the national security issues involved as the reason why he could not tell the timeline date.

His statement signaled the country’s fear against the perceived involvement of the West in the ongoing war with Ukraine.
