Are We Getting a "The Goonies" Sequel? Here's Everything We Know

Is “The Goonies” finally getting a sequel after close to 40 years since its release? The short answer is yes, and we’re excited about it.

It is still too early to know when it will be hitting theaters, but The Sun reports that production may start next year in the summer. According to the news outlet, a source revealed that,

“The Goonies reboot has been talked about for a long time but it’s finally been given the green light to go ahead. The plan is to start developing the ideas for the follow up next summer…The original is so culturally significant, Warner Bros’ know they have to get it totally right.

So the sequel to the 1985 cult classic may come in 2026 or 2027, as long as everything goes as planned.

The source also mentioned that it is “likely major stars will come back.” Based on a story by Steven Spielberg about a group of kids on a treasure hunt, the original film had an ensemble of our current beloved Hollywood stars.

Some of them are Josh Brolin (Dune), Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All At Once), Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings), and Corey Feldman (Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter). Those who may be reprising their roles or taking up a new one have not been announced.

Unfortunately, some of the original cast of “The Goonies” have passed away, such as Anne Ramsay, who played Mama Fratelli, and Mary Ellen Trainor, who played Irene Walsh. Since the plot for the sequel hasn’t been confirmed, there’s no information if their characters will be brought back or if it will scraped off entirely.
