Colombian superstar Shakira made her Copa América debut with a spectacular halftime performance during the final match between Argentina and Colombia on Sunday, July 14, at the Hard Rock Stadium. The extended 25-minute show, a first for the tournament, featured a medley of Shakira’s hits and elaborate visual effects.
Dressed in a metallic silver outfit, Shakira opened with her iconic song “Hips Don’t Lie,” followed by newer tracks including “Te Felicito,” “TQG,” and “Puntería.”
The performance showcased her renowned dancing skills and was complemented by both human and robotic dancers. The event organizers utilized 3D projections on the field, displaying wolves and floating gems.
This halftime show departs from Copa América’s traditional format, mirroring the style of American sporting events like the Super Bowl. Alejandro Domínguez, president of CONMEBOL, praised Shakira as an “extraordinary South American star” whose global appeal made her an ideal choice for the event.
However, the extended halftime didn’t sit well with some, including Colombia’s head coach Nestor Lorenzo. He worried about the potential impact on players’ performance, noting the change from the usual 15-minute break to 25 minutes could cause players to “get cold.”
The Copa América final and its halftime show were broadcast across various platforms in the United States, including Univision, FOX, and their respective streaming services. The event also featured performances by other notable artists, with Karol G singing Colombia’s national anthem and Abel Pintos performing Argentina’s.
