Jacoby Jones, a former NFL wide receiver known for his role in the Baltimore Ravens‘ 2013 Super Bowl victory, has died at the age of 40. The Baltimore Ravens confirmed his passing on Sunday, July 14, 2024.

Jones, who had recently celebrated his birthday on July 11, passed away at his home in New Orleans. His family released a statement through the NFL Players Association, saying,

“We want to express our gratitude for all the kind thoughts and support you have shown us during this challenging time. Your ongoing support and respecting our privacy means a lot to us.”

Before his passing, Jacoby Jones had been appointed head coach of the Beaumont Renegades close to two months ago.

The Renegades paid tribute to Jones in their own official statement released on Instagram. They noted that:

“Jacoby was a special football player. He loved every minute of every game and knew where he was every day was a blessing.”

Jones’ NFL career spanned nine seasons, with his most memorable performances coming during his time with the Baltimore Ravens. In Super Bowl XLVII, he became the first player to score both a receiving touchdown and a kickoff return touchdown in a single Super Bowl game.

The Baltimore Ravens organization also released a heartfelt statement, describing Jones as someone who “had the unique ability to connect with everyone he encountered. His charisma, joy and love created a one-of-a-kind presence that could light up any room or brighten any dark day.”

Furthermore, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh shared a touching memory about the late wide receiver. He said:

“My favorite football play was when Jacoby was talking to his mom in the end zone, just before a late-game kickoff return against the Vikings in a snowstorm shootout. Jacoby then raced to catch the ball and run it back for a touchdown.”

Beyond his on-field accomplishments, Jacoby Jones was known for his charismatic personality and dedication to community service. His untimely passing leaves a void in the football community, with fans and former teammates mourning the loss of a talented athlete and beloved individual.
