After years of showstopping, avant-garde looks, Rihanna is taking a step back with her fashion for the 2024 Met Gala. The ‘Diamonds’ singer revealed she plans to go with a more minimalist vibe for this year’s biggest night in fashion.
“I’m actually keeping it real simple this year,” Rihanna told Extra while promoting her new Fenty Beauty foundation line. “It’s gonna come to what my makeup and what my hair is going to do.”
The 36-year-old Grammy winner is leaning into an understated aesthetic for the annual Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala on May 6th. While typically unafraid to push boundaries with daring, conceptual ensembles, Rihanna says her 2024 Met Gala outfits will be “very simple-ish…compared to everything I have done.”
She’s reportedly narrowed it down to two relatively pared-back gown options for her grand entrance, coyly adding “I am showing up for dinner” when asked about her planned looks.
It’s a notable departure from Rihanna’s past jaw-dropping Met Gala moments. Who could forget her radiant maternity look in 2023 – a curve-hugging bodysuit covered in romantic floral appliques?
Or her powerful Pope-inspired ensemble more years back?
This year’s Manhattan gala, as always, promises an eclectic array of high-fashion from the world’s biggest stars. The 2024 exhibit theme is “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” with the official dress code dubbed “The Garden of Time” inspired by a 1962 sci-fi short story.
With Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth all serving as co-chairs, expectations are high for iconic looks from the event’s hosting committee alone. But if Rihanna’s recent comments are any indication, the billionaire singer and entrepreneur could be aiming to let her natural radiance shine through in more subtle styling this time around.
Of course, the wildly successful artist and new mother has certainly earned the right to define glamour on her own terms. Fans will have to wait until next month’s Met Gala red carpet to see just how minimalist or maximal Rihanna’s final vision turns out to be.
