During tonight’s episode of The Voice, as Team Chance the Rapper’s contestants Bri Fletcher and Serenity Arce go head-to-head in the Battles, Serenity reflects on the close friendship she shares with Bri, a sentiment often echoed by artists during interviews for the show. She expresses sadness that only one of them will advance to the Knockouts.
Interestingly, John Legend concurs with Serenity’s sentiment, acknowledging the strong bonds formed between teammates. He shares an example of two former teammates who took their bond to the next level by getting married.
While Legend doesn’t disclose the identities of the couple, a little investigation by Parade reveals that it was Season 19’s John Holiday and Rio Souma (real name DeMario Adams).
John Holiday had a successful run on the show, finishing in fifth place during his season. His rendition of “Misty” for his Blind Audition garnered a three-chair turn from Legend, Kelly Clarkson, and Gwen Stefani, with Legend blocking Clarkson to secure Holiday for his team.
In contrast, Rio’s journey on the show didn’t end as favorably. Although he made it onto Team Legend, he was eliminated during his Battle with Casmé on “You’re All I Need to Get By.”
In a previous interview with Parade in 2021, John Holiday discussed the release of his debut crossover pop single “Alive in Me,” a song about enduring love. He spoke about the importance of surrendering to love and happiness, drawing from his own experience of falling in love and becoming engaged to Rio.
Before gracing The Voice stage, John Holiday had established himself as a renowned classical countertenor, performing with various opera companies worldwide. Presently, he is captivating audiences with songs from the American Songbook at the Appel Room at Lincoln Center until April 12. Additionally, Holiday serves as Associate Professor of Voice & Opera at The School of Music at The University of Maryland.
