Pankaj Udhas, the celebrated Indian vocalist known for his mastery of the ghazal genre of musical poetry, passed away in Mumbai after battling a prolonged illness at the age of 72.
The sad news was conveyed by Udhas’ daughter Nayaab through an Instagram post, stating, “With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on 26th February 2024 due to a prolonged illness.”
Udhas made his debut with the ghazal album “Aahat” in 1980, followed by several successful albums such as “Mukarar” (1981), “Tarrannum” (1982), “Mehfil” (1983), “Pankaj Udhas Live at Royal Albert Hall” (1984), “Nayaab” (1985), and “Aafreen” (1986).
Despite the dominance of film songs in India, Udhas garnered a significant fan base with his rendition of “Chitthi Aayee Hai” in Mahesh Bhatt’s hit film “Naam” (1986) and subsequent popular songs in Bollywood movies like “Dayavan” (1988), “Gawaahi” (1989), “Ghayal” (1990), “Saajan” (1991), and “Mohra” (1994), among others.
Udhas also showcased his talent as a composer in Bollywood films like “Aurat Pair Ki Juti Nahin Hai” (1985) and “Ek Hi Maqsad” (1988).
In recognition of his contributions to ghazal music and charitable endeavors, Udhas was awarded the Padmashree, one of India’s highest civilian honors, in 2006.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, saying, “We mourn the loss of Pankaj Udhas Ji, whose singing conveyed a range of emotions and whose Ghazals spoke directly to the soul. His departure leaves a void in the music world that can never be filled.”
Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur also mourned Udhas’ passing, acknowledging his significant contributions to the music industry and offering sincere condolences to his family, friends, and followers.
Anup Jalota, Udhas’ contemporary and fellow renowned singer, expressed shock and extended heartfelt condolences to the late singer’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
