Millie Bobby Brown, the 20-year-old star of Stranger Things, has recently had people labeling her a Zionist and urging others to boycott her upcoming Netflix movie, DAMSEL.
Since the Israel-Hamas war started on October 7th, 2023, several celebrities have faced backlash for either speaking up about the conflict or keeping their lips sealed.
To summarize, the Palestinian militant group Hamas first launched a devastating attack on southern Israel, resulting in the loss of more than 1,200 lives and the capture of another 250 people as hostages. Israel retaliated by waging war on Hamas, launching airstrikes into the Gaza Strip where the group is based.
According to the Associated Press, over 29,000 people in Gaza have tragically lost their lives as of February 19th, while an additional 68,000 have been injured, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
Now Millie Bobby Brown hasn’t yet spoken out on the issue and some people are interpreting her silence as support for the horrific events in Gaza.
Social media users have been urging others to boycott DAMSEL, especially since a new trailer for the film, set to premiere on Netflix on March 8th, dropped.
Some tweets read, “Millie Bobby Brown is a Zionist. Not watching the movie. Nope.”
Another one goes, “Isn’t it ironic when psycho pro-genocide actors play roles like rebels and heros. These people rear the script and understand nothing. What a waste of talent and a waste of story on this zionist,”
Quick Fact: According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a Zionist is someone who supports, belongs to, or is related to a political movement that initially aimed to create a country for Jewish people and now supports the state of Israel.
But not everyone is against Brown. Some are defending her as well and are still gearing up to watch her movie.
DAMSEL, which also stars Ray Winstone and Angela Bassett, is about Princess Elodie, a young woman who ‘marries’ a prince she was promised to, only to get thrown into a pit with a dragon, following an age-old tradition. The young bride, who is played by Bobby, has to fight for her life and work to prevent anyone else from suffering the same fate.
