In a recent documentary, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck discuss the reasons behind their 2003 separation, which occurred merely three days prior to their planned wedding.
The film, titled The Greatest Love Story Never Told, was released on Amazon Prime Video on Monday, and delves into the pressures that led to the couple’s decision to part ways.
Lopez reflects on the collapse of their wedding plans, stating,
“We had a big wedding planned—14 ushers and bridesmaids—and three days before, we just crumbled under the pressure.”
Affleck also shares this view, noting the excessive public attention as a contributing factor, “The massive amount of scrutiny around our private life was too much to handle.”
The documentary reveals that post-breakup, there was a period of mutual resentment, which eventually gave way to self-forgiveness and reconciliation.
“For all those years (following their split), it was really hard because I didn’t just feel like I lost the love of my life, I felt like I lost the best friend that I ever had,” says Jennifer.
Some years later, the two went on to build families of their own with Jennifer becoming the mother of her 16-year-old twins Max and Emme, whom she co-parents with her former spouse Marc Anthony. Ben also became the father of 3: Violet, 18, Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 11, with his ex-wife Jennifer Garner.
In the documentary, both Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck expressed that despite the separation, their love persisted, and they now embrace the opportunity to rekindle their relationship. They also attributed their personal growth to the time spent apart and acknowledge a newfound chance at joy together.
The film chronicles their history, from their initial encounter during the filming of Gigli in 2001, through their engagement in 2002, leading up to their reconnection in 2021, and culminating in their 2022 marriage. Additionally, it sheds light on their individual careers, family lives, and their collective influence on popular culture.
