HBO has confirmed that the next Game of Thrones spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, will begin production in the spring of 2024, following the resolution of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
The announcement was made by Casey Bloys, the chief content officer of HBO and HBO Max, during a Q&A session at a recent HBO event.
The Hedge Knight is based on the first of three novellas by George R.R. Martin, collectively known as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which follow the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg, who is actually Aegon V Targaryen, the future king of Westeros.
The stories are set about a century before the events of Game of Thrones, in a time when the Targaryens still ruled the Seven Kingdoms and dragons were not yet extinct.
George R.R. Martin and Ira Parker, who collaborated as co-executive producers on the initial season of House of the Dragon, a Game of Thrones prequel centered on the Targaryen civil war called The Dance of the Dragons, will be penning the sequel. Ryan Condal and Vince Gerardis, also part of the House of the Dragon team, will continue their roles as executive producers.
Casting for the show has been underway for some time now, with the UK-based Lucy Bevan casting agency looking for actors to play the roles of Dunk and Egg, as well as other characters from the novella.
According to the casting call, Dunk is a very tall and strong soldier, who is humble, perceptive, and thoughtful, while Egg is a physically small boy, who is wise, confident, and witty.
The Hedge Knight is one of several Game of Thrones spinoffs that HBO is developing, as the network hopes to capitalize on the popularity and success of the original series, which ended in 2019.
Besides House of the Dragon, which premiered its first season in August 2022, HBO is also rumored to be working on a series about Nymeria, the warrior queen who led the Rhoynar refugees to Dorne, and a series about Corlys Velaryon, aka the Sea Snake, the most famous explorer and adventurer in Westerosi history.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight is expected to debut in 2025, as part of the new Max streaming service, which combines HBO Max and Discovery+.
