Emmy Russell, the 24-year-old granddaughter of country music legend Loretta Lynn, is making her mark on American Idol. The singer-songwriter auditioned for the show’s 22nd season with an original song called “Skinny”, which showcased her powerful vocals and emotional lyrics.

Russell, who grew up on Lynn’s ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee, said she wanted to challenge herself and own her voice.

“I just love writing…I love music. I don’t really sing out as much anymore, but growing up I sang on the road with — my grandma’s a country singer so I grew up singing.”

The judges: Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan, were impressed by the ‘timid’ songwriter’s musical talent with the piano, lyrics and of course, vocals. However, they also encouraged her to be more confident and not compare herself to her grandmother.

Russell received 3 ‘Yeses’ from the judges, granting her a ticket to Hollywood, where she will compete with other hopefuls for a spot in the live shows.

While giving Katy Perry a hug, she expressed how grateful she was for the opportunity and hoped to make her family proud.

Emmy Russell is not the only musical descendant of Loretta Lynn, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 90. Her niece, Crystal Gayle, is a 22-time global country chart-topper, and her daughter, Patsy Lynn, was part of the duo The Lynns in the 1990s.

Russell’s audition clip can be viewed below. Meanwhile, fans can follow her journey on American Idol and support her on social media.
