Larry Nassar, a former USA Gymnastics team doctor, was stabbed six times while serving time in prison.
Nassar, who was convicted of state and federal charges for sexually assaulting members of the USA gymnastics team, was stabbed in the back and neck on Sunday afternoon in United States Penitentiary Coleman in Florida.
He was said to have suffered “substantial injuries,” including an apparent collapsed lung but was in stable condition.
The Bureau of Prisons confirmed that an inmate was assaulted on Sunday at the United States Penitentiary Coleman II, a high-security federal facility in Florida, and said no one else was injured.
A fellow inmate was identified as the suspected attacker. As at the time of the report, video footage was been reviewed by the authorities to determine if there were others involved.
A source claimed that the personnel guarding the prison inmates were stretched due to shortages, and Nassar was housed in a unit with all inmates convicted of sexual assault.
Larry Nassar is serving many years of prison sentence. He was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison for multiple counts of sexual misconduct on February 2018 after his first sentence of 60 years the previous December after he pleaded guilty to federal charges of possession of child pornography. According to investigators, he had at least 37,000 videos and images, including images of prepubescent children engaged in sex acts.
According to Michigan Judge Janice Cunningham, 54-year-old Larry Nassarsexually assaulted 256 women over decades, under the guise of medical treatment.
Over 100 women, including Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles, collectively sought more than $1 billion from the federal government for the FBI’s failure to stop Nassar when agents became aware of allegations against him in 2015. He was arrested by Michigan State University police in 2016, more than a year later.
Michigan State, which was also accused of missing chances over many years to stop Nassar, agreed to pay $500 million to more than 300 women and girls who were assaulted by the doctor. USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee also made a $380 million settlement.
