Newcastle United defeated Brighton and Hove Albion 2-1 at Red Bull Arena in New Jersey on Friday to complete its Premier League Summer Series unblemished thanks to two goals from hometown hero Elliot Anderson in the final 10 minutes.
After Danny Welbeck gave Brighton a well-deserved lead shortly after halftime, Anderson forced a late error at Brighton’s defense in the 86th minute to even the score. On one of the very last kicks of the game, he sprinted through the Seagulls’ back line to locate a winner in stoppage time.
Miguel Almiron’s equalizer helped the Magpies draw 1-1 with Chelsea on Wednesday in Atlanta, which followed a Saturday 3-3 tie with Aston Villa in Philadelphia. On August 5, they will play Fiorentina at St. James’ Park.
On Wednesday, Brighton defeated Brentford 2-0 in its second Summer Series game after losing 4-3 to Chelsea in a game in which Brighton conceded and scored twice after Jan Paul van Hecke was sent off. On August 6, the Seagulls play Rayo Vallecano at home.
