Peloton is recalling almost 2.2 million exercise bikes due to safety issues after it was discovered that the bike’s seat can break during use, posing fall and injury hazards to the user.
The recent recall is the second time in two yearsthat the fitness company has recalled its equipment.
This recall involves Peloton Bikes with model number PL01 which has an adjustable seat, handlebar, and screen, which tilts up and down to accommodate different heights.
Consumers were advised to immediately stop using the recalled Peloton exercise bikes and contact the company for a free repair. Peloton is offering consumers a free seat post that can be self-installed.
So far, Peloton has received 35 reports of the exercise bike’s seat breaking and detaching from the bike during use. The risk of falls poses many injuries. Currently, there are 13 reports of injuries including a fractured wrist, lacerations, and bruises due to falling from the bike.
The affected bikes which are manufactured in Taiwan and distributed by Peloton Interactive Inc., of New York, sell for about $1,400.
Earlier this year, Peloton Interactive agreed to pay a $19 million fine after failing to quickly notify regulators of a known defect in its treadmill (Tread+) exercise machines. The company was said to have knowingly sold the defective treadmills to customers.
Peloton received over 150 reports of incidentsin the defective treadmills involving people, pets, or objects getting injured or killed by the time the company reported the problems to regulators.
