Netflix Kids 22Whos Watching22 Now Shows LGBT Rainbow Gay Pride Colors 1 2

Netflix kids logo in the home screen under “Who’s Watching” now shows the four LGBT rainbow colors (colours) also known as the gay pride flag.

The LGBT rainbow flag colors now appear on the Netflix Kids section after an update from the streaming giant.

History Of The LGBT Rainbow Flag

The rainbow flag, also known as the gay pride flag or simply the pride flag, is a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) pride and LGBT social movements.

The adoption of the rainbow flag as a symbol of gay pride started in San Francisco, California, USA, but eventually became common at LGBT rights events across the world.

According to Wikipedia, LGBT rainbow colors were first devised by artists Gilbert Baker, Lynn Segerblom, James McNamara, and other activists, and since its debut in 1978, it has had many variations. The rainbow flags and many other rainbow-themed items and color schemes have since been adopted by LGBT people and allies as an outward symbol of their identity or support.

LGBT In Entertainment

LGBT has been part of the entertainment industry for a long time and is only getting increasingly popular as worldwide support grows.

On International Transgender Day of Visibility, President Biden used the medium to criticize acts of violence and discrimination against Americans who identify as trans and nonbinary and on the rising number of Republican-led bills targeting trans youth.

“The bullying, discrimination, and political attacks that trans kids face have exacerbated our national mental health crisis,” he added.

According to GLAAD, of the 118 major movies in 2019, 22 (18.6 percent) contained characters identified as LGBTQ. Also, 1 in 5 films released in theaters in 2021 by a major movie studio included at least one LGBTQ character, of which 69% had gay male actors, 25% included lesbian actresses and 13% included bisexual characters. However, the report noted a slight drop in 2022.

Also in a report from Statistica in 2019, 45 gay characters appeared in top-grossing movies in the United States. The number of lesbian, bisexual, and transgender characters added up to ten, three, and three, respectively. Overall, between 2014 and 2019, the number of LGBT characters in mainstream films in the U.S. increased by 190 percent.

92 movies LGBT-related films were released in 2022. The movies have gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender characters or issues and may have same-sex romance or relationships as a plot device.

LGBT Movies On Netflix

There are a number of LGBT and gay movies on Netflix and the number of related content is on the rise. According to Statista, Netflix has the highest number of LGBTQ characters in its TV series, which numbered 155. In comparison, HBO Max reported a number of 71.

According to reports, Netflix and Disney had the most LGBTQ characters in their kids’ content (movies, animations, and cartoons) last year, with Netflix taking the lead. It further stated that LGBT and gay characters are targeted at children because “It is more important than ever to have content made for kids and families that depicts the LGBTQ community in a positive and empowering way.”

According to GLAAD, anti-LGBTQ legislation that was passed last year may be affecting kids’ ability to access educational resources and facilities in some states in America.

Disney and Netflix produced two outstanding examples of LGBT content for kids in 2022, according to the report, which cites Disney Channel’s The Ghost of Molly McGee (featuring a queer ghost and a gay teacher) and Disney Junior’s Eureka! (with a nonbinary student in its cast). And new series Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur features two trans classmates as well as gay dads.

Netflix also launched many LGBT/gay-related kids shows last year, including Dead End: Paranormal Park (pictured), about a gay trans boy and his pansexual co-worker. And The Dragon Prince and Princess Power and Transformers: EarthSpark also feature LGBTQ characters.
