On Monday, the coffin of Queen Elizabeth arrived at Windsor for its final resting place. After making the long journey from Balmoral Castle to Edinburgh, Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall and Westminster Abbey, and finally St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, this was delivered.
Following the Queen’s funeral earlier in the day, tens of thousands of mourners lined the streets to pay their final respects.
After the state funeral at Westminster, which was attended by world leaders, a more private committal service was held at St. George’s.
After the service, the Queen’s coffin was lowered into the Royal Vault, which serves as the final resting place for many former kings and queens. King George III, IV, and V, as well as King William IV, are located beneath the chapel. The Queen’s husband, Prince Philip, was also buried there the previous year.
Prior to that, King Charles moved forward to drape the late monarch’s coffin with the Grenadier Guards’ Queen’s Company Camp Color.
Then, the coffin was covered with the Lord Chamberlain’s broken Wand of Office, the highest position in the Royal Household. According to Buckingham Palace, the thin staff’s ceremonial breaking is meant to create symmetry with the three Instruments of State that have been taken away.
The Dean of Windsor recited a Psalm before the Garter King of the Arms read the Queen’s styles and titles as the coffin was lowered into the vault. The open memorial services for her were over after this.
She was not, however, interred in the vault. A private burial service for the royal family was scheduled to take place later on Monday night, at which point the Queen would be transferred to the King George VI Memorial Chapel. The coffin of the Queen will be interred here alongside those of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, her Mother.
The Queen’s beloved husband of 73 years, Prince Philip, will also have his casket moved so that they can be buried together.
