Biography of Ahmed Lawan
Ahmed Lawan was born in Gashua, Northern British Nigeria, before Nigeria gained independence.
In 1974, he completed his primary school education at Sabon Gari Primary School, Gashua. He also had his secondary school education at Gashua and finished in 1979.
Ahmed Lawan proceeded to the University of Maiduguri where he obtained a BSc in Geography. His other educational pursuits include obtaining a master’s degree in Remote Sensing from Ahmadu Bello University (1990) and a Doctorate in Remote Sensing/GIS from Cranfield University (1996).
The highlight of Ahmed Lawan’s pre-political career was a year in the civil service, 1985 to 1986 precisely. He worked as the education officer under the ministry of education, Yobe.
After this Ahmed Lawan lectured at the University of Maiduguri three years after he graduated from the school. There he taught for 10 years (1987-1997).
Two years later he contested for and was elected into the house of representatives, representing Bade/Jakusko constituency.
Ahmed Lawan had his first taste of the senate after being elected in 2007. Some of his popular bills include the Desertification Control Commission Bill etc.
Ahmed contested for Senate presidency in 2015 but was defeated by Bukola Saraki, despite being supported by most APC bigwigs. He contested again in 2019 and emerged victorious against senator Ali Ndume.
His reign as senate president has been mired in a few controversies, especially regarding corruption allegations.
According to rumours, Ahmed Lawan is poised to emerge as the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress party in the forthcoming elections.
