Fans of John Lenon marked 41 years after the singer with Beatles was murdered by a gunman.

His widow, Yoko Ono, decried the high rate of gun violence and gun-related deaths in the United States.

“Over 1.5 million people have been killed by guns in the U.S.A. since John Lennon was shot and killed on December 8, 1980.”

Ringo Starr also remembered his former band partner on Twitter saying “Peace and love my friend”.

Americans took to social media to pay homage to the late music star, many calling for a revisit on U.S. gun laws.

Guns laws need a massive overhaul in America – @Gridlad2

Wow. That is a sobering, sobering statistic. I learned this week that Mal Evans also was shot and killed (by police). I’m so sick of guns. It’s easy to imagine what guns took from us with John’s murder. But think about the lost potential of 1.5 million others! – @allyseale

December 8th has always been an unforgettable date. I was 18 years old when John Lennon was senselessly taken away from us. I remember 12/08/1980 in it’s entirety like it was yesterday. I still think about you John. I miss you, the world misses you – @CarolynW1757
