The Catholic Pope, Pope Leo XIV, has again called for a ceasefire and talks of peace in Gaza. This is as the bombardment of Gaza by the Israeli Defence Forces has lasted up to one year, 11 months, and 1 week, as of today.
Pope Leo, in a statement, said he shares in the fear and deplorable life the Palestinian people in Gaza have been subjected to in their own lands, and reminded the so-called “God’s chosen country”, Israel, to remember the sixth of the Ten Commandments, “Thou shalt not kill”.
He reminded the warring governments to respect the dignity of life, release their hostages, and look towards a lasting peaceful resolution.
Furthermore, he called for catholics and christains worldwide to join in communal prayer for the dawn of peace and justice on earth.
Israeli PM declared war on Gaza-Palestinian-based terrorists, Hamas, and its other strongholds following the attack by its militants on October 7. Though the events on that day have been a subject of debate, even to its late supporter, Charlie Kirk, who suggested that there was a stand-down order by the Israeli Government to allow the attack on that day, Netanyahu has been decisive and steady in giving terror to the militants and their hideouts.
1,200 Israelis, comprising 821 civilians and 379 military personnel, died at the hands of Hamas militants on October 7. The subsequent invasion by the IDF had led to the deaths of an additional 525 military personnel. Currently, 48 hostages are still being held captive by Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
The Palestinian side have suffered very heavy casualties, where about 65,062 people have been killed, including 14,222 others who are missing and presumed dead. Though there are no records distinguishing civilian and fighter deaths, majority of the deaths are said to be civilian, many of them being women and children. Also, between 192 and 244 members of the press have been killed so far while covering the war.
