The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the United States has issued an elevated recall across the country for 64,800 pounds (1,800 cases) of Butter Blend (Bunge North America’s NH European Style) as a result of an undeclared milk allergen being detected.
The product was formerly recalled on July 14, but the recall alert was upgraded by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on July 30 after the agency confirmed that milk, which is a major allergen, was not found on the label of the product.
The recall, which was earlier placed in Class III, has now been moved upward to Class II.
The difference between these two classes is that Class III shows that while there is an alert for the product, it may cause no harm, but Class II suggests that exposure to the product may lead to temporary or medically reversible health effects, especially among those who have milk allergies.
This recall is still needed despite suggesting a low risk of severe or life-threatening reactions. The Class II upgrade of the alert focuses on the need for proper labelling of allergens to ensure the safety of consumers.
The people who have milk allergies have been warned to stay off the usage of the butter and to pay attention to further updates from the FDA.
