A long-serving American Senator from Illinois has made his intention of retirement public. Durbin claims that he will not contest again after serving this term, which will make it more than 40 years since he has been a member of Congress.

Senator Durbin, who is currently 80-years-old and a member of the Democrat party, revealed this intention in a video that was made public on Wednesday. He says it is the right moment to “pass the torch.”

“In my heart, I know it’s time to pass the torch,” Durbin said.

“The threats to our democracy and way of life are real, and I can assure you that I will do everything in my power to fight for Illinois and the future of our country every day of my remaining time in the Senate.”

The Illinois man has become a member of the United States Senate since 1996, and has contested four times after already serving as a member of the country’s House of Representatives.

If the Senator stays true to his word and intention, a very competitive contest is bound to occur among Democratic members from Illinois who will be willing to step in his shoes.
