A long-serving American Senator from Illinois has made his intention to retire public. Durbin claims that he will not contest again after serving this term, which will make it more than 40 years since he has been a member of Congress.

Senator Durbin, who is currently 80 years old and a member of the Democratic party, revealed this intention in a video that was made public on Wednesday. He says it is the right moment to “pass the torch.”

“In my heart, I know it’s time to pass the torch,” Durbin said.

“The threats to our democracy and way of life are real, and I can assure you that I will do everything in my power to fight for Illinois and the future of our country every day of my remaining time in the Senate.”

The Illinois man has been a member of the United States Senate since 1996, and has contested four times after already serving as a member of the country’s House of Representatives.

If the Senator stays true to his word and intention, a very competitive contest is bound to occur among Democratic members from Illinois who will be willing to step into his shoes.

Senator DIck Durbin retirement again opened talks on the age of politicians in office. On February 20, 2025, Senator Mitch McConnell announced that he would retire in 2026. The 83-year-old who had been in office for 7 terms and is the longest-serving Senate leader in history, made headlines twice after he appeared to freeze while addressing the public.
