Alex Ovechkin will equal Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL goals record if he scores one more goal, but he is patiently waiting to break the record in the best manner.
Alex Ovechkin, who plays for the Washington Capitals, equaled Gretzky’s record of 894 scoring with two goals recorded early in the third period against the Chicago Blackhawks.
Alex Ovechkin insisted on not returning to the ice with an empty net in the last minutes of the game, informing the team’s head coach, Spencer Carbery, that he was not willing to achieve the record without a goalie.
This choice from the Washington Capitals star marked the significance of the moment. “You don’t want that to be an empty-netter,” he ended up mentioning. During the game, rookie Ryan Leonard netted his first professional goal in his third NHL match.
Ovechkin came back strong into the game and was almost going to achieve a hat trick after Chicago reinserted goalie Spencer Knight, hitting four shots in the last two minutes of the game, all stopped by Knight, whose effort got boos from the home crowd.
The Washington Capitals emerged winners after recording 5-3. Ovechkin hopes to equal Wayne Gretzky’s record when his side plays against the Islanders on Sunday and against the Hurricanes at home on Thursday.
Commissioner Bettman and Gretzky continue to watch with maximum support.
