It’s bad times for the aviation industry – both passenger and military, with the recent crash of a Navy fighter jet into the San Diego Bay as it was about to land.
The recent military jet crash happened at about 10:17 a.m. near Naval Air Station North Island, Naval Base Coronado, and involved a Navy EA-18G Growler jet manned by two pilots. Video below:
Though the cause of the crash is under investigation, Military said the aircraft went down as it was trying to land on Wednesday morning. The jet which was assigned to Electronic Attack Squadron was approaching NAS North Island but failed to land at the runway.
It flew past the runway then the pilots ejected and the jet slammed into the sea. The video of the crash saw the fighter jet with its landing gear out crash nose first at high speed into the sea.
Luckily, both pilots ejected on time. Their parachutes landed on the sea but they were quickly rescued by people in a fishing boat who witnessed the crash. They were then taken by. U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations boat that was close by.
In response to the crash, the Navy had set up an apparatus to contain oil spills in the area and said the two pilots were taken to the hospital for proper checkups. A Navy spokesman said a large chunk of the crashed aircraft was still underwater.
The military jet was in San Diego for an exercise and had come from Naval Air Station at Whidbey Island
The public is also warned to stay off the area and not to collect any debris that might be found floating around or washed ashore and should report any being found.
A few weeks ago, a military Black Hawk helicopter flew into a passenger plane in mid-air just after an F-35 fighter jet crashed when it wanted to land on the runway along the Richardson Highway at the airport close to Fairbanks.
