The San Francisco 49ers franchise has decided to reinstate Robert Saleh as the team’s defensive coordinator, following their search for a new head coach.
Saleh was not the top pick as the 49ers wanted Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen, but he was offered a sweet deal to remain with his current franchise.
However, it is unclear whether Coen has decided to take the deal or not, as there were rumors he was going to sign for the Jacksonville Jaguars instead.
Before returning to the Niners, Saleh had a few stints with the New York Jets. However, he could not get the team up to standard even after more than two seasons. For that, Saleh was fired, while the Jets continued their decline in form.
Before joining the Jets, Saleh was the Niners’ defensive coordinator from 2017 to 2020, and he had an impressive record with them. But for the last two seasons, the Niners have struggled with their form, hitting their lowest in recent seasons.
With Seleh’s previous record with the Niners, the franchise would hope that he could take on another milestone and take the team to where it needs to be; at the top.
Last year, the Niners really struggled with their collective mentality. They had the worst games late in the year and struggled with injuries and attitude.
“It’s been a rocky mountain,” receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. said. “We are not having the season that we want to have. Our record doesn’t show how really good we are as a team.”
