Liverpool has cemented their position as the leader of the Premier League race after a deserving 3-2 comeback victory at St. Mary’s against Southampton, which currently sits at the bottom of the league table.

Southampton took their early lead after being motivated against Liverpool, but Egypt’s forward Mohamed Salah returned to help Liverpool score a goal and a late penalty to seal the victory.

Southampton scored the first goal in the early minutes of the match through Dominik Szoboszlai, but it was canceled out by a rebound from Adam Armstrong from a penalty saved and Mateus Fernandes’ debut goal in the Premier League.

While the efforts of Southampton must be acknowledged, they failed on the defensive side, and that cost them the match. Liverpool scored an equalizer when Alex McCarthy, Southampton’s goalkeeper, miscalculated a long ball from Ryan Gravenberch, which gave Mohammed Salah the chance to fire the ball into the net.

Yukinari Sugawara committed an unnecessary handball in the box ten minutes later, which provided a penalty opportunity for Liverpool, and Mohamed Salah again converted this opportunity into a goal, making it a brace in the match.

Liverpool’s first goal of the match was as a result of the opposition’s carelessness when Fernandes lost possession; the Hungarian fired a deserving shot into the net.

Southampton dominated the midfield and created a lot of dribbling that kept the league leader on the edge, but Salah’s goal created a lot of pressure from Arne Slot’s men, which they later used in winning the match and cementing their dominance in the Premier League table.
