Lionel Messi is nearing making another international history after his country, Argentina, defeated Peru 1-0 in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.

Both sides played a draw until the second half when Lionel Messi and his teammate Lautaro Martínez collaborated to deliver a brilliant finish.

The former Barcelona star broke Peru’s defense and had a great curled cross into the box area, which Martinez successfully converted into their only goal.

This assist by Messi has equaled him with U.S. soccer legend Landon Donovan for the most assists created by any player in the men’s international soccer game after reaching his 58th assist record.

Messi, who is now 37 years old, is expected to break the record considering that he still has World Cup qualifying matches to play in 2025 against both Uruguay and Brazil.

This assist has proven the player’s strong playmaking impact in the history of soccer and has also secured the top position in the CONMEBOL standings for Argentina after racking up 25 points from 12 matches in the tournament.

Fans across the world and football lovers cannot wait to see Lionel Messi break another record due to his unrelenting performance in every game.
