Libya Misses Out Of AFCON Again Despite Draw Against Benin

The Libyan national football team lost out of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) that will be played in Morocco next year after the team failed to defeat Benin Republic side on Monday evening at Tripoli International Stadium.

Libya entering the game against Benin Republic knew that they had to do everything possible to win the match after a 3-0 penalty was awarded against them in favor of Nigeria.

As Rwanda failed to defeat Group Leader Nigeria, Libya was unable to secure every possible chance, leaving their hopes to play AFCON in Morocco in shambles.

Nigeria tops Group D’s table with a total of 11 points, followed by the Benin Republic, which sits in second place after securing 8 points, leaving Rwanda to crash out of the tournament on head-to-head results. Libya was left at the bottom after securing only 5 points.

Libya was unable to do much in this year’s AFCON qualifiers campaign despite their struggles to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, but their hopes were dashed.

The team last qualified in 2012, making it the third time that they will play in the AFCON, while their best game in the tournament was in 1982 when they ended as a runner-up.

This loss has extended their wait for another AFCON experience, contributing to their woes at the AFCON level.
