Arthur Smith , the offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers, has been selected as a leading candidate for the job of head coach at the University of North Carolina (UNC), according to a report from On3’s Andy Staples.

Smith’s alma mater, North Carolina, disclosed that they will part ways with their current head coach, Mack Brown, after the season, which has caused speculations about Arthur Smith’s comeback to college football.

Smith is also reported to have the support of influential boosters and university leaders, providing him a good advantage if he chooses to take the role.

He has gained good experience in coaching after his role as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons and his current job with the Steelers, where he is still being valued.

If Smith decides to remain with Pittsburgh, his role at the moment could help to define a good path back to a head coaching position in the NFL. His return to UNC as head coach would also be a major shift in his career, presenting a new task at his alma mater.

If Smith decides to return to his former school, the Steelers will need to start searching for a new offensive coordinator at the next offseason.
