Britain’s Influence In Australia And Why Senator Lidia Thorpe Wants A Total Separation
Despite the forceful takeover of Australia by early British settlers which led to the death of almost 14,000 indigenes, SBS – Australia Explained says that Australia owes formal as well as sentimental allegiance to Britain because many of their traditions and laws were gotten from them – following the colonization.
It explained that Australia, just like other Commonwealth nations owes allegiance to Britain as its Head Of State. The Head of State – being either the King or Queen of the UK does not live in far-away Australia, but appoints a representative to see over its affairs, and that representative is called the Governor General.
However, just like the United States power in the United Nations (UN), every election or law must be approved by the British representative in Australia before they become effective
Aside from the Governor General at the helm of affairs, the United Kingdom also appoints a representative in each of the Australian states, as well as provinces in Canada.
