Sanija Ameti, a politician in Switzerland uploaded photos of herself holding a gun and shooting at a picture of the infant Jesus and his mother Mary. The first picture shows her aiming a handgun and the second picture shows the Christian image riddled with bullets.
She uploaded the photos on Instagram as part of a shooting target practice but took them down when it started causing an uproar.
The 32-year-old woman who headed the Liberal Green Party in Zurich was forced to resign her position after the right-wing Swiss People’s Party filed a criminal complaint against the Muslim woman for violation of freedom of religion and worship. To buttress the severity of her actions and distance itself from the consequences, her party is also pushing to expel her.
Ameti in her defense said she did not know that the images were that of a religion.
Sanija Ameti came to Switzerland with her parents as a refugee after her family fled her country, Bosnia and Herzegovina, in 1995.
She studied law at the University of Zurich and came into politics during the COVID-19 pandemic by heading the counter-campaign to the anti-terrorism law which she says went against fundamental human rights.
