Ipswich scored a surprising late equalizer as Sam Morsy’s shot reduced Southampton’s already secured three points to one, denying the club its first win of the season. Southampton took an early lead after Tyler Dibling’s goal, but the game ended in a 1-1 draw after extra time.
Dibling scored the first goal in the game in the five minutes into the game, giving Southampton hope for their first win of the season. Dibling’s brilliant shot, after a thoughtful reverse pass that came from Adam Lallana, beat Arijanet Muric and gave the team a lead for the first time this season.
Ipswich dominated the game after the goal, taking possession and creating good numbers of chances, but that could not turn the chances into a goal. Cameron Archer missed an opportunity to score as his shot hit the past after rounding the goalkeeper, which proved costly.
Omari Hutchinson gave Ipswich’s their best effort in their first half, after the curling show was intelligently saved by Aaron Ramsdale.
Despite Southampton securing the better opportunities in the second half, including a wayward effort from Fabrice Fernandes and a missed opportunity by Ben Brereton Diaz, who came in as a substitute, they could not extend their win.
Sam Morsy, who captains Ipswich, scored from the edge of the box in the seven minutes of added time, with his shot deflecting off Joe Aribo to secure a late draw.
The 1-1 draw helps Southampton earn their first point of the season after they lost their first four games, while Ipswich extended their unbeaten run to three games.
