Nigerian Victor Boniface helped his side’s Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkuse deliver a saving stoppage-time winner as he scored in a thrilling 4-3 win on Sunday against Wolfsburg.

As Bayer Leverkusen managed to steal three points against Wolfsburg, Borussia Dortmund were embarrassingly defeated 5-1 by Stuttgart.

In an intense back and forth between both teams, Leverkusen and Wolfsburg, the game was locked at 3-3 from the 48th minute.

Wolfsburg was reduced to a 10-man squad when its player, Yannick Gerhardt, received a red card at the dying time after he committed a dangerous attack on Jeremie Frimpong.

Boniface came in as a substitute 22 minutes to the end of the match, capitalizing on the man advantage. A pass was crossed to him; he spun it and fired a shot that saw the inside of the net, helping Leverkusen secure a win.

The win also gives an important boost as they face Bayern Munich in their next-week encounter.

Granit Xhaka, who plays midfield for Leverkusen, tagged the result “a wake-up call,” as he expressed dissatisfaction despite that his side won the match. Manager Xabi Alonso made crucial changes to the team that included starting Nordi Mukiele in his first match.

Nordi Mukiele did not have a smooth beginning as he mistakenly scored a goal against his own team in the fifth minute, though Leverkusen did not waste time before scoring a goal in response, levelling the game through Florian Wirtz.
