Jets Resist Trade Request From Holdout Haason Reddick

haason-reddick

Haason Reddick’s contract with the New York Jets took an unthinkable phase on Monday as the Pro Bowl edge rusher officially asked for a trade. The Jets, in response to the request, released a statement with weighty words, declaring that they have no plan to give in to Reddick’s request.

Reddick did not show up at the training camp for 21 days due to his dissatisfaction with his contract, which incurs a mandatory $50,000 penalty for each day missed. Above all the fines and lost bonus money from an offseason incentive, his holdout has cost him a sum of $1.7 million.

Since Reddick was acquired in a trade just four months ago, he has yet to join in a single practice with the Jets. He has only been to their place once—for his physical and introductory press conference that was held on April 1st.

The Jets traded a 2026 conditional third-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for Reddick, a two-time Pro Bowler. The Jets thought that Reddick would play under his existing contract, but tensions arose when he refused to participate in the entire offseason, which includes mandatory minicamp.

Sources reported that the Jets have a policy of not discussing a contract with a player until he gets to the camp, while Reddick has stated he won’t feature in any training or game unless his contract is upgraded.

Reddick, who is 29, is arranged to earn a non-guaranteed $14.25 million in base salary in the final year of the three-year, $45 million deal that he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as a free agent in 2022.

He believes that he has outperformed his contract and is seeking a contract that aligns with the compensation of top-edge rushers, which led to the Eagles shopping him despite his strong production.

The Houston Texans’ Danielle Hunter, who has recorded an equal number of sacks as Reddick since the last two seasons (27 each), recently agreed to a two-year, $49 million contract in free agency for comparison. Reddick may be pushing for a similar figure.

Reddick has tallied 50.5 sacks over the last four seasons, putting him in the fourth position in the league during that period.

The Jets were quick to trade for Reddick after losing sack leader Bryce Huff to the Eagles in free agency, one of several big-name acquisitions this year. In an interesting manner, the Jets did not address Reddick’s contract situation at the time of the trade; sources suggested that they offered to extend his deal. The exact details of the offer are still unknown, but it likely fell short of the guarantee Reddick is looking for.

Sources confirm that the Jets expressed a preference to look again into the contract later in the season or possibly after it, including that the team was surprised when Reddick did not attend any voluntary workouts.
