Former Dodgers Pitcher Reyes Moronta Dies At 31

Former Dodgers pitcher Reyes Moronta has died, according to multiple reports. He was 31 years old. He died in an accident in the Dominican Republic.

According to the Associated Press, he was riding a motorcycle in the Villa Gonzalez community in the northern part of the Dominican Republic, his home country, when the accident occurred on Sunday night.

Additional details about his death were not available.

He joined the Dodgers in March 2022, and appeared in 22 games before he moved on to other Major League Baseball teams and eventually Mexican and Dominican baseball leagues.

“We profoundly regret the unexpected death of pitcher Reyes Moronta, who died yesterday,” Dominican team Aguilas Cibaenas said in a statement on social media Monday.

“The Aguilas board, the baseball operations department, and players share the pain with his family, and we pray for his eternal rest.”

Moronta played in 17 games with Arizona in 2022. He had two saves for the Diamondbacks and recorded a 4.50 ERA, pitching 14 innings. He was non-tendered by Arizona and signed with the Texas Rangers but never pitched at the big-league level for them.

He made two appearances in the majors last season with the Los Angeles Angels.

Moronta pitched in 177 games in his career, posting a 3.056 ERA in 171.1 innings.

“We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Reyes Moronta, who pitched for the Giants, Dodgers, Diamondbacks, and Angels over six seasons,” MLB said Monday on X.

Moronta was born in the Dominican Republic. At 17, he signed with the Giants as an international free agent in September 2010. He appeared in 136 games from 2017 to 2021, the team said Monday on X.

The Giants said they were “saddened to learn” of Moronta’s death.

“His warm spirit will be missed by all, and our thoughts are with his friends and family at this difficult time,” the team said.
