Rafael Nadal made a scorching return to the tennis arena on Tuesday, delivering a commanding performance as he defeated Italian player Flavio Cobolli in straight sets, securing a 6-2, 6-3 victory in the first round of the Barcelona Open.
Competing in his second tournament within a span of 15 months, the 37-year-old Spaniard showcased his prowess on the clay court, marking his official return after a hiatus of 681 days. Notably, Nadal triumphed on the “Pista Rafa Nadal,” a court named in honor of his illustrious career.
With a swift start, the twelve-time event champion seized an early lead against the 21-year-old Cobolli, dominating the first set with a 4-1 advantage, ultimately clinching the set in just 43 minutes. The match concluded in an hour and 25 minutes, underscoring Nadal’s remarkable comeback.
Nadal’s 17th appearance at the Trofeo Conde de Godó signaled a seamless reentry into the competitive realm, following a series of setbacks due to injuries.
Having endured a “micro tear on a muscle” during a quarterfinal defeat in January’s Brisbane International, Nadal’s anticipated return to tennis was met with further challenges. These setbacks led to his withdrawal from this year’s Australian Open.
Despite earlier indications of contemplating retirement, voiced during a press conference in May 2023 following hip surgery, Nadal hinted at the possibility of extending his career beyond 2024 in a recent statement.
Up next, Nadal is set to face Australian world No. 11 Alex de Minaur, promising another thrilling showdown on the court.
