Last year, Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell set tongues wagging with their playful chemistry while promoting their romantic comedy “Anyone But You.”
The co-stars engaged in flirtatious banter, shared cozy red carpet moments, and fueled relentless dating rumors. However, it turns out this perceived showmance was a deliberate tactic orchestrated by the savvy Sweeney herself.
In a recent interview with the New York Times, Powell admitted that the romantic speculation was part of a calculated marketing strategy.
“Sydney and I have a ton of fun together and we have a ton of effortless chemistry,” he explained. “Sometimes you just have to lean into it a bit — and it worked wonderfully. Sydney is very smart.”
Sydney echoed this sentiment, revealing her hands-on involvement in driving the promotional buzz.
“I was on every call, I was in text group chats. I was probably keeping everybody over at Sony marketing and distribution awake at night because I couldn’t stop with ideas,” she said. “I wanted to make sure that we were actively having a conversation with the audience as we were promoting this film….they’re the ones who created the entire narrative.”
The actors even sustained the charade post-release, with Sweeney addressing the “craziest rumor” about them dating during her SNL monologue. Their efforts paid off handsomely – the $6 million rom-com has grossed over $200 million globally.
