Our favourite wizards are making a magical return to Disney this year! The network officially announced a reboot of the beloved series Wizards of Waverly Place is coming this fall. On their Instagram page on Friday, they wrote:
“Making magic, then and now 🪄 The new Wizards of Waverly Place series is coming this fall!”
Selena Gomez, now 31, celebrated the news on Instagram, commenting “WE ARE BACK!! SOOOO GRATEFUL 😍MAGIC🪄🪄” on the announcement post shared by Disney and her former co-star David Henrie. She even reposted it, giddily writing “Guess what? WE GOT PICKED UP FOR SEASON 1!”
David Henrie, who is now 34, also shared his enthusiasm on social media, posting a throwback photo with Gomez writing “CAN’T WAIT!!! See you this fall”
The reboot, titled simply Wizards, will see Henrie reprising his role as Justin Russo in a series regular role. Meanwhile, Gomez, who played his sister, Alex, will make a guest appearance.
According to Deadline, the new show catches up with adult Justin living a non-magical life with his family, until Alex arrives with a young wizard she needs him to train, throwing his world into chaos once again.
While plot details are still under wraps, the reboot is already generating major buzz by reassembling much of the original Russo family, including David DeLuise and Maria Canals-Barrera.
For fans of the 2007-2012 supernatural sitcom about a wizard family, seeing Gomez and Henrie reunited has been pure nostalgia magic. The pair were all smiles in a January group photo with the new writers and cast members.
After years of hoping, the Russo siblings’ return to Waverly Place is finally becoming a reality. And if Gomez’s giddy reaction is any indication, this revival is shaping up to be truly spellbinding.
