Brian Mulroney, who was once the Prime Minister of Canada, has passed away at the age of 84. He was considered a resilient individual, known for his leadership in significant causes like free trade and environmental issues.
Mulroney was born in Baie-Comeau, Quebec, and he rose from humble beginnings to become a successful lawyer and businessman before entering politics. As Prime Minister from 1984 to 1993, he introduced the Goods and Services Tax, negotiated free trade agreements like NAFTA, and made efforts to reform the Canadian Constitution.
However, despite his many accomplishments, his legacy remains controversial due to issues like the Airbus affair and his role in Quebec nationalism.
Brian Mulroney’s passing was announced by his daughter Caroline Mulroney after he suffered a fall at his home in Palm Beach, Florida. She wrote in both English and French on X saying,
“On behalf of my mother and our family, it is with great sadness we announce the passing of my father, The Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, Canada’s 18th Prime Minister. He died peacefully, surrounded by family.”
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that a state funeral will be held to honor the late Brian Mulroney, describing it as a “right and fitting tribute” for the former Prime Minister. He also mentioned that the government are “working with the family closely to ensure that all of their wishes are respected,”.
Flags have been lowered to half-mast on government buildings, including the Peace Tower in Ottawa, as a sign of mourning. A book of condolences has also been set up for Members of Parliament to sign, allowing them to pay their respects to the former prime minister.
Brian Mulroney’s death marks the end of a chapter in Canadian political history, leaving behind a mixed legacy that includes both praise for his statesmanship on key issues and criticism for alleged financial misdoings. His impact on Canada’s politics will be remembered as both transformational and contentious.
