Two Police officers and a first responder were killed in Burnsville, Minnesota after responding to a call of a “family in danger” on Sunday morning according to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.
“We must never take for granted the bravery and sacrifices our police officers and first responders make every day,” Walz said. “My heart is with their families today and the entire State of Minnesota stands with Burnsville.”
The Police Officers were Paul Elmstrand, 27, and Matthew Ruge, 27 as well as Adam Finseth, 40, who worked as a firefighter and paramedic.
Another officer who was on scene Adam Medlicott, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The City of Burnsville released a statement giving an account of the incident.
An armed man had locked himself with his family members.
“At approximately 8 a.m., the suspect was reported to be dead,” The city statement said. “Later in the morning, the other family members left the home and are safe. There is no ongoing threat.”
Burnsville city officials announced a press conference would be held Sunday afternoon to address the shooting.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara posted on X asking the public, “Please keep Burnsville Police Dept in your prayers this morning.”
Jim Nash, a Minnesota state representative, also posted to social media on the report.
“My heart is heavy for the families of these officers, the community of Burnsville, and for our country because this headline is not unique,” Nash wrote.
