Daniil Medvedev, a two-time Australian Open finalist, defeated ninth-seeded Hubert Hurkacz to reach his third straight major semifinal.
This is Medvedev’s 75th Grand Slam match win and he recorded 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
A former world No. 1, Medvedev had lost his last two matches to the No. 9 seed before winning this one in under four hours.
After nearly exiting the tournament in a late-night five-setter against Emil Ruusuvuori, he beat No. 27 seed Félix Auger-Aliassime and conquered a thrilling four-set match against Portuguese trailblazer Nuno Borges to reach his first quarterfinal in Melbourne since 2022.
Hurkacz had enjoyed a bright start to the tournament. He knocked out French wild card Arthur Cazaux to reach his first Grand Slam quarterfinal since the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
Medvedev will face Carlos Alcaraz or Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals, with their match taking place later on today at around 10 am UK time.
“I’m so destroyed right now! Not that I ran out of gas but it was feeling very tough at the end of the second set already,” said Medvedev.
“So I was like ‘OK I need to try and stay tough’. I broke in the fourth but then he played good and I’m not going to be tough on myself.
“In the fifth set I just concentrated and said ‘OK, I just have to try my best to do whatever I can. If I lose, I lose and I go home. That’s OK. But, I’m happy that I managed to win.”
